Fire Cider

This winter, combat the sniffles and boost your immunity with one of our favourite creations— Fire Cider. Created with a traditional folk recipe, this healing remedy we call Fire Cider is truly unforgettable. This spicy Winter tonic is not only full of vitamins, and minerals, it has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal properties, helps to improve digestive function, fights off infections, helps remove toxins from the body, kills parasites in the blood, alkalizes your body, improves circulation and gets rid of stagnation, and more. It is truly Nature’s medicine and one of the safest options out there- with no side effects.

What is in Fire Cider?

This fermented and savoury infusion called Fire Cider contains raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar, horseradish, onions, garlic, ginger, cayenne, turmeric, thyme, raw wildflower honey, and love. These ingredients are 100% certified organic, and locally sourced (with the exception of the ginger, cayenne and turmeric— which as you know does not grow in Ontario.)

How to consume Fire Cider?

    • Drink an ounce (or more!) every morning to boost your body’s natural healing processes. Dilute it with water if the flavour is too strong for you.

    • In case you feel the sniffles coming on, take a larger dose to boost your immune system (you can also have multiple ounces throughout the day).

    • Add a few ounces to Virgin Mary drinks (or your favourite Ceasar), salad dressings, or even fried rice. It is also a great addition to organic bone broths, and to stews or chilis.

What are the benefits of Fire Cider?

This spicy, potent tonic improves overall healing processes in the body by boosting immunity and digestion, improving blood circulation, and fighting off infections. Each ingredient contributes to this amazing concoction.

    • Horseradish is known to be effective against cold and flu and other respiratory infections. It will get rid of mucous stagnation and fully clear out the sinuses.

    • Ginger is used to treat arthritis, muscle pain, upset stomach (motion and morning sickness and general nausea), gas, upper respiratory tract infections, and coughs. It is also warming on the digestive tract- increasing your digestive fire, and body’s natural heat during the cold Winter season.

    • Onion is used to boost cardiovascular health. It is also anti-bacterial, and anti-viral and is helpful at breaking up mucous stagnation in the body.

    • Garlic helps build and boost the immune system, help level blood sugar, and is used topically to treat fungal infections. It is a strong antiviral, and stimulates immune function.

    • Raw honey is an all-natural fighter of seasonal allergies and helps to soothe sore throats. It is also a natural anti-microbial, and contains living microbes from the local environment which help to populate your digestive tract.

    • Cayenne aids in circulation, eases muscle aches and pains, and reduces inflammation and congestion in the body.

    • Thyme fights cold and flu symptoms, infections, and boosts immunity. It is anti-septic and anti-virual.

History of Fire Cider

This old folk remedy has been used by many herbalists for a long time but was developed and popularized in the late 1970s by Rosemary Gladstar, an herbalist and founder of the California School of Herbal Studies. She fought a legal battle to prevent companies from trademarking this product that is meant for all people. Click on the link to watch a video of her talking about this magical elixir and how it should be available for the well-being of all people equally and free to make.

Fire Cider is traditionally made with apple cider vinegar and ingredients in season near the herbalist (or maker), but the base ingredients are apple cider vinegar, garlic, onion, ginger, horseradish, and hot peppers. Some people like to bury their fire cider jar in the ground for a month and then dig it up during a great feast to celebrate the changing of the seasons.

You can also add other herbs and immune boosting ingredients to your fire cider- I’ve seen turmeric, lemons, oranges, cinnamon, cloves, elderberries, peppers and more.
